Start:
End of the Trail/Otter Lake Road
Follow Arrowhead Trail from Hwy. 61 4.5 miles to Jackson Lake Rd. Turn right on Jackson Lake Rd. and go 8.4 miles to Otter Lake Rd. at "T" intersection. Turn left (west) on Otter Lake Rd. and go 2.0 miles to trailhead parking lot.
(shuttle to start in 15 passenger van. Vehicles left in Grand Portage. Will shuttle back to pick them up after finish in Tofte.)

Park is located in Tofte, MN just off Hwy. 61 near the lake.

$250 per person if registering by July 9, 2012
$275 per person after July 9, 2012 until race day (August 22, 2012)

Stages:
Prologue: 1.5 miles - Hill climb to the top of Mt. Josephine
(prologue will take place just after pre-race meeting on Wednesday night)
Prologue will follow the Mt. Josephine Trail and end at the top. Additional route markings may be added at the top of the mountain to provide direction to finish line.

Stage 1: 28.9 miles - End of the Trail/Otter Lake Road to Judge C.R. Magney State Park
Route will follow the Superior Hiking Trail from the parking lot at Otter Lake Road to Judge C.R. Magney Stage Park. Follow Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes. Stage will end in Magney State Park parking lot. No additional route marking necessary.
Campsites reserved for runners at Judge C.R. Magney State Park.
Route will follow the Superior Hiking Trail from the parking lot at Otter Lake Road to Judge C.R. Magney Stage Park. Follow Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes. Stage will end in Magney State Park parking lot. No additional route marking necessary.

Stage 2: 23.6 miles - Judge C.R. Magney State Park to Grand Marais, MN
Stage will start in the Judge C.R. Magney State Park parking lot and follow the Superior Hiking Trail for its entire route. Follow Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes. Stage will end at Pincushion Mountain trailhead parking lot on Co. Rd. 53 (Pincushion Drive) just off Gunflint Trail (Co. Rd. 12) in Grand Marais. No additional route marking necessary.
Group camping area will be designated. Group camping will be available at the Grand Marais Municipal Campground. Runners will be shuttled from finish to campground.
Stage will start in the Judge C.R. Magney State Park parking lot and follow the Superior Hiking Trail for its entire route. Follow Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes. Stage will end at Pincushion Mountain trailhead parking lot on Co. Rd. 53 (Pincushion Drive) just off Gunflint Trail (Co. Rd. 12) in Grand Marais. No additional route marking necessary.

Stage 3: 35 miles - Grand Marais, MN to Lutsen, MN
Stage will start at Pincushion Mountain trailhead parking lot on Co. Rd. 53 (Pincushion Drive) just off Gunflint Trail (Co. Rd. 12) in Grand Marais. Follow Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes. Stage will end poolside at Caribou Lodge at Lutsen Resort on Cook Co. Rd. 5 (Ski Hill Rd.). Additional markings will direct runners to finish line at Caribou Lodge. Same finish line area as spring and fall Superior Trail Races.
Group camping area will be designated. Working with Lutsen Resort to designate site in large open area next to resort.
Stage will start at Pincushion Mountain trailhead parking lot on Co. Rd. 53 (Pincushion Drive) just off Gunflint Trail (Co. Rd. 12) in Grand Marais. Follow Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes. Stage will end poolside at Caribou Lodge at Lutsen Resort on Cook Co. Rd. 5 (Ski Hill Rd.). Additional markings will direct runners to finish line at Caribou Lodge. Same finish line area as spring and fall Superior Trail Races.

Stage 4: 16.2 miles - Lutsen, MN to Tofte, MN
Stage will start at trailhead parking at Lutsen ski area on Cook Co. Rd. 5 (Ski Hill Rd.). Follow Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes. Stage will end at Tofte Town Park in Tofte, MN. When runners reach the top of the Superior Hiking Trail, just before going up to the summit of Carleton Peak, they will be directed down a rough spur trail. This intersection will direct runners off of the main Superior Hiking Trail and will be marked clearly with pink flagging. Follow the spur trail down to a gravel road. Follow the gravel road downhill to the paved Gitchee Gammee Bike Trail. Follow the bike trail all the way to where it crosses Highway 61. Cross Highway 61 onto Tofte Park Road at the Sugar Beach Resort sign. Follow Tofte Park Road to the finish line at Tofte Park on the shores of Lake Superior. The spur trails and gravel roads will be marked with pink flagging.

Detailed map of Stage 4 finish - Departure from SHT
VoyageurQuest route in Red, SHT continues across Carlton Peak in blue. Depart from SHT at Ted Tofte Overlook spur trail, follow old overgrown road down to gravel road. Follow gravel road (Forest Road 1201) downhill until junction with paved bike trail where you will turn left off of gravel road.

Follow paved bike trail eventually paralleling Highway 61 and then crossing Highway 61 onto Tofte Park Road. Stay on Tofte Park Road until you see Tofte Town Park on your right. Turn right into the park and proceed across the finish line.
Route Markings: The VoyageurQuest course will follow the Superior Hiking Trail for almost all of its route. You will be following Superior Hiking Trail signs and blue blazes that look like this:
The trail is marked well with these signs and blue blazes, but you will need to pay attention to follow these signs. If you pay attention, you will have no problem following the VoyageurQuest course.

Post race celebration will take place at the Bluefin Bay Resort near the finish line in Tofte, MN. Celebration will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday August 28. All runners, whether they finished every stage or not, will be invited to the celebration. Donations for other family members eating at the celebration will be accepted.

Average temperatures in August for the Grand Marais, MN area include a high temperature around 70 Degrees F. and a low temperature around 50 Degrees F. Temperatures inland, away from Lake Superior can be hotter. Average precipitation in August is 3.36 inches. August is generally the hottest month in Grand Marais.
